Maintain set schedule
- This is one of the most critical elements of productivity when working from home. If you normally wake up, go for a walk and shower before heading into the office – implement those same fundamentals into your daily routine.
- Office hours help your clients, colleagues and family preserve normalcy and understand the expectations remain intact.
- Continuing a schedule gives you a time to log off for the day. It’s imperative to carve out time to exercise, prepare healthy meals, rest and socialize.
Appropriate space for work
- For associates that have not worked from home in the past, it may be tempting to work from the couch or in front of the television. I’ve even heard of people working from their bed. Having separate spaces for activities helps draw a line between work functions and rest time.
- While we may currently have a minimalistic technology set up, it’s important to have an area designated for working.
- Headphones can help alleviate some distractions and background noise.
Take breaks
- When working in the office, it’s common to wander down to the coffee station and chat with colleagues. Maintain the recommended breaks – two 15 minute breaks and a lunch break. Go for a walk to get some fresh air, make a healthy snack or call a friend.
- Taking breaks helps with keeping the schedule, encourages movement and helps us to refocus on the tasks ahead.
Talk to your family
- Your family may not be accustomed to the new dynamic. Especially if you have children that are now being homeschooled.
- Set boundaries for work time, home school time, quiet time during conference calls, fun activities and meals.
- Blue light blocking glasses are fantastic if you’re looking at a screen all day.
